What to wear to celebrate Canada Day

The Canada Day long weekend is a time when most people skip out of work early to celebrate this amazing country. How can you look sartorially smart given the many things you may get up to? We’ve compiled a list of looks to try.

If you’re headed to the cottage

When your Canada Day plan is to lounge around on a dock, there’s no better ensemble to don than a beautiful bathing suit (Old Navy, $23) avec a chic wrap (violet-lake.com; £150) that can double as a cover-up. Slip-on sandals (ALDO; $35) are a must, and accessories should be kept to a minimum. Oh, and always apply sunscreen!

If you’re headed to an outdoor concert

Summer is the time for people to stand outside in the sun and catch a live performance of their favourite band, and such events call for a casual look and layers. Wear denim shorts (shopfidelitydenim.com, $95) and a tank during the day; accessorize with an oversized scarf (shopbop.com, $246). When the temp starts to drop at night, you can use the scarf as a shawl. Sneakers (Sporting Life, $390) are also a must so that you remain sturdy while hitting the mosh pit.

Comfort is king when you know you’ll be sitting in a car for extended periods. In this instance we suggest wearing a floor-length maxi (Anthropologie, $138) that will give your body some wiggle room. Pair with cute sandals (toms.ca, $70) and a see-through blouse tied at the waist (saksoff5th.com, $100) to add definition to the looser dress.

If you’re having a picnic with friends

It’s always fun to lounge around a park, and Canada Day is the perfect time to do it. Because you’ll be stretching out on the grass and likely getting your hands dirty, we suggest wearing ripped grey jeans (Gap, $80) and a tee with a slogan (Zara, $30). Birks (SoftMoc, $80) work best for footwear, and fedoras are a great go-to accessory.

If you’re having a BBQ

Are you throwing a fabulous fete for your friends and family over the long weekend? Then this is your time to shine sartorially! Wear a cute Mad Men-esque dress (Anthropologie, $168) with a simple pair of flat sandals (ALDO, $70); pair with a standout necklace and some gold accessories. If you’re cooking, top your ensemble with a beautiful apron to prevent stains from ruining your stellar style.
