A to Z of style

M = Mesh

M = Mesh |

We know what you’re thinking: “Mesh? Why would I want to look like a punk rocker from the 1980s?” And we hear you. But this season’s mesh-wear is far more sophisticated (and less hole filled) than you might think. (, $395)

N = Nearly nude

N = Nearly nude |

Beige! Nude! Off-white! These are the shades of spring/summer 2014. Wear them on everything, especially in shoe and handbag form. We love the idea of mixing and matching the colours to create one bold neutral look. Think nude flats, white pants and an off-white tee. (Zara, $50)

O = Orange

O = Orange |

Orange is the new black — for beauty, fashion and even home decor. If you’re afraid of going full-on tangerine, then reach for one of the more subtle shades in the orange family (peach, dark yellow). You can also add the hue to your wardrobe in subtle ways, like via lipstick, nail polish or patterned flats. (ASOS, $61)

P = Pantsuits

P = Pantsuits |

Not to be confused with this season’s other suit fave — the jumpsuit — the pantsuit is 2014’s modern-day answer to the fashion worn in Working Girl and Nine to Five (only with less shoulder padding and smaller bouffants). Think sleek lines, slim-line tailoring and piping that’ll accentuate the best parts of your bod (like your leg length). (Ann Taylor, $182)

Q = Quiet, subdued colours

Q = Quiet, subdued colours |

Last spring and summer, everyone was all about neon. If you weren’t wearing something lime green, you weren’t on trend. This season’s more subdued palette in the form of pretty pastels is a welcome departure from such eye-blowing shades. “It” colours include mint, pink and yellow. (, $91)

R = Rebel with a fashionable cause

R = Rebel with a fashionable cause |

If you were one of the many people who invested in leather pants and jackets or shoes with spikes and studs over the winter, fret not. These items will still be on trend this summer. Go all out and wear all your rocker looks at once, or mix and match with this season’s more feminine pieces (like flowy skirts and lace). (Forever 21, $30)
