How to edit your own photos

Several photo editing programs are available to help you make the most of your personal photos. But how well do they really work?

Here are some suggestions on how to use simple digital editing tools to achieve the results you want!

We’ve all been there: The photo that seemed perfect when you did a quick preview doesn’t seem so great now that it’s full size on your computer screen. What should you do? The solution is simple, and when used correctly, it may help banish bad photos entirely. Yes, a quick and easy fix with an edit tool might be all that photo needs to save it from the discard file. There are many programs to help you out, but here is a brief guide to common editing tools you can use to make your photos picture perfect!

Crop tool

One of the most common mistakes people make when taking photos is not getting in close. Your photo should be about the subject matter you care about, so use the crop tool to cut out the unimportant details. A word of caution, however: Cropping out a large portion of a photo may result in a reduced resolution of the subject, so try to keep a balance of subject and background whenever possible.

Red-eye removal

Apparently this is a common affliction for many people — bright red eyes! Put the kibosh on this unsightly trend with the use of the red-eye removal tool. It’s a simple point-and-apply application that will keep everyone looking human instead of like beings from some underground netherworld!

Boost the colour

In the days of yore, photos would sometimes come back from the developer’s either over- or under-exposed. With the digital photos of today, that’s a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean your photos come out colour beautiful every time! Fortunately you can take matters into your own hands and adjust the colour saturation to suit your personal vision. Add warmer or cooler hues, saturate with colour, add highlights or darken the photo as you choose, and if you can’t decide, some programs will even do this for you!

Straighten it out

Maybe you were standing on a hill, about to swat a mosquito, the subject wouldn’t quit moving or you had a third margarita at lunch, but regardless of the reason, that memorable photo you took is completely off kilter. No worries; just use the straightening tool and handy grid to make it perfect.

Have some fun

Photo editing does more than just make that photo album ready; you can also use it to just have some fun! Turn a picture into a classic black-and-white photo, perhaps make it special with a soft focus edge or maybe take it a step back in time with a sepia or antique application, but whatever you choose, just remember to keep a hold of your photo memories, as they will be yours for a lifetime!
