30 Ways to reduce your environmental footprint

It’s more important than ever to be aware of and work to reduce our impact on the environment. There are many simple ways to conserve energy and water and to actively protect the earth and air in everyday life. Start today!


According to Environment Canada, every effort big or small is a step in the right direction when it comes to “going green,” and making changes may save — or even make — you money. For example, recycle unwanted items by selling your used goods, or “upcycle” and create something new, such as a patio lantern from an old jar. It’s easy to get started on reducing your impact on the environment in everyday life. Here are some other ways you can reduce your environmental footprint.

  1. Cut down on trash big time by using recycling services and composting.

  4. Ditch the paper towels and use washable, reusable cloths instead.

  6. Direct used electrical items and appliances to appropriate recycling or disposal facilities, not landfills.
  7. Be sure you have energy-efficient appliances in your home.
  8. Keep appliances free of dust accumulation, and clean filters so they’ll run efficiently.
  9. Wash clothes in cold water.
  10. Get clever with blinds and drapes to help insulate your home against hot and cold — saves money on air conditioning and heating costs.

  12. Replace old light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs — they last much longer and use less energy.
  13. Turn off the lights/radio/television when you leave the room — no-brainer!
  14. Install a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature in the house (and turn it down a couple of degrees) — energy- and money-saver!

  21. Get a rain barrel and use whatever rain you collect to water plants and grass.

  23. Keep the tap turned off when brushing teeth or washing dishes.
  24. Keep the oven door closed during use and look through the oven window instead to save energy.
  25. Chemicals in mothballs can be harmful — try cedar chips instead.
  26. Telecommute to work when possible.
  27. Pack litterless lunches.
  28. Start drinking water from reusable containers instead of grabbing bottled water.
  29. Shop with reusable shopping bags, and ditch plastic bags for good.
  30. Fill up a reusable coffee mug each morning instead of taking a disposable cup. And don’t idle in the drive-through; park and go inside.
