Considering adopting a cat? Before you bring a lovable fluffy feline into your home, here are some factors to consider.
Have the cute cats at the adoption centre caught your eye? Cats make wonderful pets, but they’re not as easy as everyone makes them out to be. While cats don’t call for the numerous daily walks that dogs do, they are still a big responsiblity, and adopting one should not be taken lightly. Here are some considerations before you take one into your home.
Adopting a cat is a long-term commitment
Cats have long lifespans; many live for 18 years or so. So be sure you’re ready for this type of commitment before falling in love with the cuddly ball of fur. You should want to be in it for the long haul.
The duties of cat ownership
Cats may not need to be walked, but you will have a litter box to scoop daily, litter to sweep up, vet appointments to take them to, playtime so they get exercise, and claws that need to be clipped regularly. And while you can get away with leaving them at home alone for a day or two if you leave them enough water, they will get lonely. If you travel often and live alone, are you prepared to have someone come in to take care of your cat (remember to include this in your cat budget too)?
Your furniture may get scratched or dirty
Are you willing to have some cat fur around your home and on your clothes? Or to have your furniture a bit scratched up? If these issues are non-negotiable to you, then a cat may not be your ideal pet. Even if you have them declawed, their back paws may scratch items. Plus, your carpet may get sullied if your cat throws up. Are these things you can live with?
Your cat may not be a cuddler
Cats, as you probably know, can have all sorts of different personalities. And while dogs generally always seek your love and attention, not all cats are like this (and figuring out their temperament at the adoption centre can be difficult). It’s best if you don’t have your heart set on a particular personality, because there are no guarantees your cat will be friendly to strangers or will want to cuddle with you all the time.
