If you’re looking for a fun family getaway or couple’s retreat, Calgary just might be the answer. Alberta’s largest city is inviting and offers plenty of unique sites that certainly make it worth the trip!
The sport facilities
Calgary is a great city for anyone who likes to stay active. Nose Hill Park, for instance, is 11 kilometres of forests, trails and fields for your every athletic endeavor. It is great for running, biking, dog walking, hiking and organized sports. The park is so large that once you get to its centre you won’t even believe you’re in a major city anymore. Or, you can go for a stroll or a jog along the serene Bow River. No matter how you like to stay active, Calgary is sure to have an option that suits your needs.
The prime location
The city itself is loaded with all the amenities you would expect of a community of over a million people. There are many perfectly excellent malls, restaurants and museums. But Calgary also excels through the unique opportunities granted by its location. Less than a two-hour drive will get you to The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, which contains one of the world’s largest collections of dinosaur skeletons. Or, for a more romantic getaway, just a couple of hours will get you to the serene settings of Lake Louise or Banff. You can see a lot of what’s splendid about Canada when using Calgary as a starting point.
Undeniably, the most unique and coolest event the city has to offer is The Calgary Stampede. It runs for ten days in July every year. There are celebrity appearances, parades and rodeo competitions of every kind. Always wanted to witness a horse race or sheep-shearing competition? Now is your chance. Been wondering how a single dog gets half a dozen sheep into a pen in under a minute? You can witness it here. The event draws rodeo professionals from all over Canada, the U.S. and the rest of the world. Join the thousands of people strutting around in their best cowboy hats and leather boots. The city of Calgary already has a great sense of community, and when Stampede season hits, that support is kicked up a notch. Everyone is eager to welcome visitors and provide tourists with a great experience. Even Will and Kate made the event one of their stops on their tour of Canada. And this year is a particularly great time to stop by, as 2012 marks the Stampede’s centennial anniversary!
Whether you’re looking for a couple’s getaway or a fun family outing, you’re sure to enjoy spending your vacation time in Calgary, Alberta!
