7 Ways to brighten your rental space

Nothing sucks my energy more than a dark room. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Follow these tips to brighten up any space, anywhere.

t So you live in a rental and you can’t knock down that wall that will totally open up the space and add tons of light. You also can’t cut down that tree in the front yard that blocks out the sun like a solar eclipse. It’s frustrating to live in a place that’s dark, but there are some simple things you can do to brighten up any space.

1. Open those blinds

t This may seem like an obvious one but let that light shine. If your room has a window, start there. Just this one simple thing can make a world of difference to your mood.

2. Paint a piece of furniture

t These days painting furniture will not get you “tsk-tsked.” Instead it may get you a ton of kudos. Painting a side table or that old bookshelf helps to add personality and color to dark spaces.

3. Use brightly colored throw pillows and blankets

t Sometimes the way to brighten up your space is through accessories. Try a few throw pillows in your color scheme to cheer up the room.

4. Try your hand at some DIY art

t You don’t have to be a professional artist to make some pretty amazing art. Try making an abstract painting or frame something meaningful. Use a white frame for that brightness and the glass will reflect light in your space as well.

5. Go for gold

t Gold is not just for grannies. Gold is incredibly chic and adds that sparkle that will instantly illuminate your space. Try gold accessories like frames, lamps and hardware.

6. All white everything

t White attracts light. If you live with a room that has little or no natural light, think about using all white furniture to make the room feel light, bright and airy. A couch is easy to slipcover and white paint hides a multitude of sins.

7. Lamps, lamps, lamps

t Search out dark corners of your home and stick a lamp in them to brighten up that spot. You’d be surprised how far a little light goes to improve how your feel in your space.
