Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon! Estately looked at factors such as the weather, dog activities, walk score, yard size, meet-up groups and the availability of dog sitters to come up with the most dog-friendly city, and this Pacific Northwest city barks its way to the top. You and your pooch will enjoy the warm, dry summer temperatures as well as dog-friendly restaurants (such as the Tin Shed Garden Café, which has its own doggie menu), pet-friendly resorts and 33 amazing dog parks.

If you and your pet would rather spend the dog days of summer at the beach, San Diego, California, is a great summer destination. In fact, it’s ranked as the second-best U.S. city for dogs for its amazing weather and dog-friendly beaches. San Diego also hosts a dog surfing competition, called Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, and you can’t miss National Dog Party Day on June 21.

The beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel in southwest Florida are dog-friendly spots. They have beaches designated exclusively for dogs to roam unleashed, with dog-approved names like Dog Beach, Pooch Park, K-9 Corral and Barkingham Park.

Basin Harbor Club, a family-owned hotel on 700 acres located right on Lake Champlain in Vergennes, Vermont, is another top-notch destination for families with dogs. The club has a private dog beach, pet-friendly cottages and a special pet package. The icing on the cake is the Woofstock event, which raises money for the local humane society.

You may be surprised to learn that you can take your dog to Wine Country this summer. Sonoma County, California, has the perfect temperatures and several dog-friendly wineries, as well as beaches and parks nearby. You and your pooch will love Mutt Lynch Winery, which welcomes dogs with treats while you sample their delicious wines. In fact, they do special events for your furry friends, including birthdays, “puppy” showers, even “Bark” Mitzvahs!

At Kunde Family Estate Winery, another dog-friendly winery, you and your dog can take the Eco Tour Dog Hike through the gorgeous Kunde Family Estate vineyards. This hike lasts four hours and concludes with wine tasting and a Wine Country lunch.

What about traveling outside of the U.S.?

Before traveling outside of the U.S. with your dog, check pet travel restrictions and make sure you have all the documents you need. Check USDA-APHIS to find out specific requirements, including whether you must quarantine your dog for a period of time.
