Kitchen color trends: Jonathan Scott’s predictions for 2014

Jonathan Scott is known for creating drool-worthy kitchens on the popular HGTV show Property Brothers. SheKnows spoke to the home improvement expert about emerging kitchen trends for 2014. Find out what’s trending and see which home bloggers have already got the look.

Bold wall treatments and whimsical wallpaper might be emerging as a big home trend overall, but when it comes to kitchen design, Scott likes to keep the wall color simple.

“As far as actual design trends, we’re seeing, generally, that we’re trying to keep the spaces neutral and calm, and fresh and clean feeling, and then introducing really vibrant pops of color.”

Scott says those bursts of colors are coming in decorative accents like vases, furniture pieces and artwork.

When picking finishes, it used to be that stainless steel and granite counter tops were all anyone talked about. Now, Scott says, people realize there are a lot more options out there.

“We’re seeing a lot of different counter tops, like quartz counter tops, and we’re seeing, actually, the revival of white appliances.”

White appliances, really?

But these aren’t your average white appliances. Scott says they’re seeing “really cool, glass, glossy white appliances.”

Gray is the “it” color

As we approach the end of 2013, decorating enthusiasts are speculating which color will replace Emerald green as the Pantone Color of the Year for 2014. As for Scott, well, he’d prefer to continue using what he knows works well for clients.

“For me, I like to stick to crisp and fresh and clean, so you’ll see that I still use a lot of grays,” he explains.

Unlike some of the trendy hues that come into vogue for a short period of time and have a decidedly feminine spin (we’re looking at you, Tangerine Tango), grays have a classic look, “and grays work well for both men and women,” Scott adds.

Gray doesn’t have to be boring. Scott recommends keeping the larger surfaces, that is, the “paint surfaces,” fairly neutral, and then introducing pops of color with the decor, such as area rugs and window coverings.

“From season to season you can change up the decor without having to repaint everything and get a whole new look just by changing out the decor.”

Glossy white appliances are becoming increasingly popular in high-end designer homes. While we’re waiting for this trend to be embraced by the blogosphere, we’re digging how chic this simple white stove looks in this budget-friendly kitchen renovation by blogger Stacie Bloomfield.

While this traditional kitchen has a classic look, it has a few traits that are right on trend, too. Homeowner Joan Ross used a blogger paint color favorite, Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl, as the neutral color for the kitchen walls. She also passed up granite counter tops in favor of a soapstone finish.
