4 Dresses you need for your fall wardrobe

When we think autumn, the season doesn’t normally solicit thoughts of dresses and skirts. Fall means layers, knits and boots to most of us — but why not transform some of the biggest trends of the season into layered looks featuring our favorite staple: the dress! Here are four dress styles to look for when reinventing your autumn wardrobe.

Something leather (or pleather)

I love this trend because it allows for instant edge! Plus, what better time to wear an often heavy fabric like leather (or faux leather) than when the temperature starts to drop? Opt for a classic sheath silhouette and soften the look with accessories galore.

Something scholastic

You can’t deny that plaid, pleats and oxfords are back with a vengeance this season, so I chose to take this style to the next level by layering a Peter Pan-collared sweater beneath a fitted blazer. Small details, such as lace trim or a tie at the waist, make this formerly formal look casual enough for the everyday.

Something monochromatic

Sporting one color from head to toe can seem daunting, so go the tonal route! Pairing subtle variations of the same hue can be strikingly bold or softly demure — it’s all about your personal style! Here, I paired a silky coral A-line with rust-toned tights and salmon flats. The turquoise necklace breaks up the ensemble in a fun way, too.

Something ’60s mod-inspired

One of ModCloth’s signature styles, the ’60s mod movement is certainly every vintage lover’s soft spot. By pairing a retro sheath silhouette with ’60s-esque accessories such as a cloche hat and buttoned booties, you can really drive the look home. However, to avoid appearing as if you’re wearing a costume, add some modern touches such as sheer tights or a bright belt.
