The warm weather is here and the official first day of summer is right around the corner. Get your skin ready for the summer with these helpful skin care tips.

Exfoliation is essential, especially in the summertime. Slough off all those dead skin cells and reveal smooth, glowing skin. For most people, exfoliating a couple days a week is perfect. However, if your skin becomes irritated, you should scale it back to once a week and change to a gentler product. Keep in mind that newly exfoliated skin is more susceptible to the sun’s harmful rays, so be diligent with your sunscreen.


Speaking of sunscreen, we all know that sunscreen is vital when heading to the beach or pool. However, you should really wear it every day. Choose a sunscreen with broad-spectrum SPF 15 to 30. Most people don’t need a higher SPF than that. SPF 30 filters out approximately 97 percent of the sun’s rays. According to the FDA’s new sunscreen guidelines, sunscreen labels can only state “broad spectrum” (which is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology) if the product provides protection from both UVA and UVB radiation.


All that heat and humidity in the summer can leave your face more oily and dirty than other times of the year. You may have to change up your cleanser in the summertime. Switch over from a creamy cleanser to a more powerful face wash or scrub.


Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Though the winter chill and wind are long gone, it doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need moisture. The sun, salt water and chlorine can be drying to your skin, too. If you use a heavy moisturizer in the colder months, you might try a light serum or tinted moisturizer for summer days. You should still pay extra attention to the areas around your eyes and mouth, where wrinkles tend to form first. When choosing skin care products, look for those with antioxidant ingredients and nourishing botanicals to fortify your skin and help protect it from free radical damage.
