We interview Simon Doonan of Barneys New York about spring trends, fashion dos and don’ts and taking that dress from desk until dinner — he’s so fun!

Spring is about flinging those fashion rules

LovingYou: Love the “desk to dinner” concept. Can you share more on that? What are must-have pieces to transcend from day to night (and maybe happy hour in between)?
Simon Doonan: A great pair of heels in your desk drawer can catapult you to an evening look. Nothing says “take me to dinner” quite like a dramatic pair of oversized cuffs.
AND, remember, it’s not always about adding. A simple tailored jacket at the office can be removed to reveal a bustier dress for dinner.
LY: If we are on a budget, what are a few new pieces we can put in our wardrobe in order to embrace spring trends but not go overboard?
SD: If you are really on a budget, you would be insane not to log onto our new Barneys Warehouse site.
barneyswarehouse.com. Glorious designer deals.
LY: What do you see as investment-worthy wardrobe staples that will withstand the test of time?
SD: This is a long list: An Alaia bag; A Manolo classic; Rick Owens leather; A Delvaux anything; A Celine something and a gorgeous necklace from Irene Neuwirth.
LY: Over the winter, you gained a few pounds. What do you wear this spring to hide those 10 pounds as you try to lose them by summer?
SD: Whether you are skinny or zaftig, every woman needs a Lisa Perry trapeze frock in her closet.
LY: Were you keeping up with the NYFW runways? What were some of your favorite new trends to look forward to?
SD: Every designer did great leather jackets. It’s going to be a great Easy Rider fall. Vvvrrmmm!
