Spring trend watch: Exotic prints

Exotic prints have been appearing more and more. And it’s not just Aztec patterns — designers this season worked the runway with influences from Asia, Africa and more.

Exotic prints conjure up a sense of wanderlust in all of us. Adding rich, bold patterns and luscious colors to your wardrobe is a fantastic way to incorporate prints. However, if you choose an exotic print this spring, try to keep the rest of your look more restrained. If your top has a lot going on, then pair it with a pair of dark washed denim and a dark blazer. The pop of color and print from beneath your outer layer is just enough to add attention and excitement to your look but also keeps it appropriate for work or casual outings.

Vera Wang, Derek Lam, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Mara Hoffman all showed exotic prints on big pieces like long dresses, skirts, jackets and slacks on runways this year. Some designers, like Wang and Altuzarra, even went so far as to mix and match different prints and patterns to result in true globetrotter looks. Everyone loves to see and wear fun, colorful and unique patterns. This trend was all over the runways — and that means it’s going to work its way into your closet this season.

Add a little flair to any outfit with these great exotic print clutches from Anthropologie (seen on right). They would look great with boyfriend jeans, killer heels and a simple white tee.

A lasting trend

If you thought animal prints were over, you’re wrong! “They, along with floral leaf type prints, are still going to be extremely popular this spring and summer season but with a bit of a twist,” says Kristina Michniak, Global Apparel Manager for Spreadshirt.

Printed denim has been everywhere for the past year and with jeans like these from Michael Kors, perfect for the spring and summer season, it looks like this trend will be around for a few more months. Think of pairing this loud print with an accent shaded flowy tank top in coral like this one from Bella available at Spreadshirt.

And now to the animal prints. Check out this awesome abstract A-line skirt in a blue and black print from Forever 21. Isn’t it gorgeous?

The bottom line? The animal trend is here to stay, and if you are going to go bold, commit to it!
