Spring trend watch: Neons rule

Neons have stuck around for another spring season, and we’re super excited — neon may just be the thing you need to add a bit of excitement following up an extremely blah winter season!

Bright neon colors are no longer a fashion faux pas or a shameful mistake from the ’80s. If you are hesitant to incorporate this bold color palette into your wardrobe, consider focusing on some of the more friendly electric colors. Cobalt blue is a gorgeous color on so many skin tones, and if paired with simple nude heels and a neutral handbag, instead of overwhelming you, an electric dress screams “statement!”

Catch some sun

Since they’re very bright and eye-catching, neons work well in warm weather. “While looking at electric fabrics, one might be intimidated by their extreme nature, so an easy way to jump on board is by incorporating an accessory. This way your look won’t be overwhelming and keeps the pop of color,” says Natasha Fussell, online stylist at

Be brave

There’s absolutely no reason to fear color! “Even those who love to wear all black everything can experiment with bright colors on top or bottom, while keeping the other half neutral (Neutrals looks great with brights!),” says Sara Cooper, a fashion and wardrobe stylist based in New York City.

And for those of us who embrace color, colorblocking is such a fun way to experiment with your wardrobe and mix and match. This Equipment electric yellow silk button down is a great starter bright. It works with nearly everything from skinny jeans, to tucked in with wide leg jeans, to untucked with denim shorts and tucked into high waisted skirts and pants. You can button it up to the top and layer a bib necklace and leave the top few buttons open for a sexy look.

For those of us that can’t get enough color, these Reed Krakoff bright blue slacks are a must. Pair with a lightweight crew neck sweater, or tuck in this Equipment shirt for a fun colorblocked look. Pair this look with patent leather pointy toe pumps for a chic and sophisticated ensemble.

Be the center of attention in this unique orange and lace dress from Fashion Week San Diego designer nOia. Or, show your wild side with this show-stopping bikini from Aida and Syncletica for Dos Caras. For a more subtle take on this trend, have some fun with these easy Nail Wraps from NCLA.

Consider going all out

“Some designers went for an electric avenue effect by sending neon garments down the runway — but not just as an accent piece — the trend this season is to wear different neon colors together, and from head-to-toe,” says Nicolle Keogh, fashion editor, Justluxe. Case in point: Chado Ralph Rucci, Diane von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta and Helmut Lang each showed neon collections.

While some pieces were colorblocked, most designers showed neon looks from head-to-toe. Best of all, the designers know how to help you pull off the electric avenue look in a sophisticated — not juvenile — way. Tailored suits, skirt and jacket combos, jumpsuits and dresses help you wear the fun color combos in a grown-up way.
