Makeup for black hair

Pucker up

Deep, dark hair and fairer skin? Nothing beats a warm red lipstick for your coloring. Avoid orangey reds and strong pinks, and go for shades that flatter: raspberry reds, warm reds, blue reds, geraniums, roses, berry colors and soft plums.

Lip liners keep lipstick from bleeding, and they define your lip shape. If you’re lining your lips, don’t extend the line outside of the natural shape; select a product in the same shade as your lipstick. L’Oreal has a nice pairing of lipliners to complement their Colour Riche lipsticks. A moisturizing gloss in a juicy color will bring shine to your pout.

Eyes on you

Dark eyes can carry more defined and dramatic colors such as rich chocolate, while lighter eyes call for more subtle washes of shadow. Try a translucent plum or soft sage color for green or blue eyes.

Keep your brows shaped and groomed, and use a brow corrector to fill in sparse areas or to accentuate the arch. Always choose a color that is a close match to your natural hair color.

Black mascara is a must. Add sweep and volume with two coats on your upper lashes. Mascara with a smaller brush helps separate lashes.

Foundation evens out skin tone and hides imperfections, but don’t overdo. A sweep of translucent powder will set your foundation. Use one in the same color as your natural skin tone, and finish the look with a dusting of pink blush, applied to just the apples of your cheeks, to brighten and lift. Blend well with a big, fluffy brush.
