Good news comes today for 100 preschools and day care centers in California! A local farm industry group is providing grants for edible gardens so children can learn where food comes from.
As a gardener, I love the idea of teaching others about fresh, garden food and teaching them young. This grant from Western Growers Foundation, based outside Irvine, Calif., will provide 100 area schools with $1000 each to plant edible gardens. The California Department of Agriculture and Department of Education will administer the grants this year.
“School gardens create wonderful a-ha moments for students to truly understand where their food comes from and the work behind growing what we like to call the best medicine in the world,” Paula Olson, a vice president of Western Growers, said in a statement.
Kudos Western Growers Foundation!!! to What a wonderful step in the director of curbing childhood obesity!
