Luminarias are a familiar holiday sight on Christmas Eve in the Southwest U.S. These small paper-bag lanterns are a clever and attractive way to light up your yard and garden paths this holiday season.

Luminarias are easy to make. Start with clean, brown or white paper bags and fold the open end of the bag down about an inch to create a cuff. Fill the bags with a handful of sand or rocks to weigh them down and line your driveway, curb and garden with the bags. A lit votive candle provides the light for each luminaria lantern.

Since you are playing with real fire, avoid using luminarias on windy nights. Battery-powered votives are another option to provide the warm candlelight without fear of burning anything.

You can make unique luminarias for your garden using printed paper bags or by cutting out a stencil and placing one complete paper bag inside the cut-out one.
