DIY Nursery signs
For many moms to be, one of the most exciting parts of getting ready for the baby's arrival is designing the nursery. One of the trendiest projects out there right now for nursery decor involves a name sign for the baby! Whether you're painting it on the wall, creating custom canvas art or painting the actual letters, be sure to check out these three incredibly unique and amazing nursery sign DIYs!
Many name signs that are currently found on popular sites such as Etsy, Pottery Barn Kids or Crate and Barrel can retail for nearly $300! As a new mom, with a long list of more necessary expenditures to get before baby arrives, it's likely that this is completely out of your budget. Instead, create your own nursery sign! No matter what your budget is, you can easily tackle one of these beautiful DIYs , created by and inspired by real moms.
Painted canvas art
One of the least expensive DIY options for a unique nursery sign is a painted canvas -- all you need to buy are the canvases and the paint. If you're not an experienced painter, don't worry, you can buy cheap stencils online and just paint inside the lines! This beautiful and unique, Under-the-Sea-themed nursery sign, created by Jessica of Heart on the Homestead, was made to fit her son's nautical-themed nursery. Made for less than $25, this is an inexpensive project that is a perfect to tackle on a rainy weekend day while you're waiting for your due date to finally arrive.
What you'll need:
- Four 8 x 10 white canvases (can be bought at a craft store)
- Light blue paint
- Royal blue, red and black paint pens
- Crab, boat and anchor stencils

Painted hanging letters
If painting freehand is a little too advanced or time consuming for you, try this simpler project, which simply involves painting wooden signs. As easy as buying hanging letters and painting, this super cute DIY won't take much time at all. Keep costs low by purchasing inexpensive letters from Craft Cuts.com, where many cost less than $1 each! The great thing about this project is that you can customize the colors and the shape to fit your nursery's theme perfectly. For some incredible painted sign and nursery inspiration (and envy!), check out the vintage tea party themed nursery by Blair Mott, of The Ellwood Chronicle's. For her sign, she outlined the letters in deep purple, then painted the inside bright pink for the perfect pop of color.
What you'll need:
- Hanging wooden letters (like these)
- Your choice of paint colors
- Painting tape (if you choose to outline)
To paint these letters, simply place them on newspaper or cardboard and paint! Let them dry overnight, at least, before hanging. For more photos and information on this hanging sign, check out Blair's site.
If you're looking for an easy way to feature a statement sign in your nursery, try something similar to this beautiful monogram sign. One unique aspect of this sign is that you can match the pattern behind the monogram to that of your baby's bedding or chair cushions! Plus, its design is on the simple side, so if you have busy bedding, patterned wallpaper or wall decals, it won't create a cluttered, constrasting look. Kimberly, the talented woman behind Custom Nursery Art, only paid for the canvas and the letter, since the paint and paper were all leftovers from other nursery projects, making this the perfect project if you're on a tight nursery budget.
What you'll need:
- Basic 18 x 24 white canvas
- Paint colors of choice
- Wooden block letter
- Matching scrapbook paper or fabric
- Paint pen
