The Hunger Games: Decor inspired by District 12
You might not think there’s anything remotely chic about the derelict nature of Katniss’ home – District 12 – but we beg to differ. While it might seem dark and void of anything but dirt and grime, we like to think of it as dramatic, gothic and utterly fascinating. With that in mind, we put together some decor ideas inspired by District 12. It might be the poorest district, but it definitely doesn’t have to look it.
We were immediately drawn to this sleek black console table (potterybarn.com, $600) with just the right amount of drama to be inspired by District 12. Sized to span the full width of a standard sofa, the table's black finish adds a touch of gothic charm while the six small drawers offer ample opportunity to stay organized.
Having the right lighting fixtures in your home can go a long way toward shaping the space and creating a certain mood. Case in point: this elegant, minimalist wire pendant hanging lamp (westelm.com, $99). It has the stylish silhouette of a standard chandelier but the industrial materials make it perfect for a District 12 accent.
Mini black vases
There’s something vaguely dramatic and slightly gothic about these mini decorative vases that could be used alone (empty) or to house a single bloom (gumps.com, $20 each). Line your mantel or even a windowsill to create an eye-catching, subtly dramatic display.
Normally we go for bright pillows that add a pop of color to neutral chairs and couches, but in an effort to channel the bleak chic of District 12, this gorgeous pillow caught our eye (cb2.com, $30). The eerie scene depicting the edge of a stark wood seems a perfect District 12-inspired discovery.
We can almost see Katniss’ mother and Prim stocking the many shelves of this antique-inspired cabinet with their herbs, tinctures and other remedies use to treat the sick and wounded of District 12 (crateandbarrel.com, $349). The black lacquered finish and vintage brass pulls make for an elegant addition to any dining or living room.
Branch coat rack
Looking like something Katniss and Gale might have dragged in from one of their forays into the woods, this ornate and eye-catching coat rack adds instant appeal to any entrance way (westelm.com, $199). Sculpted in the shape of natural tree branches, the solid-wood coat rack is both rustic and charming.
Decorative bird cage
There’s something inherently gothic about bird cages, and we could see Primrose Everdeen adding to her collection of animals (after her ornery cat and ever-faithful goat) with a sweet little bird. This simple but stylish cage can be used to add a unique twist to any room (potterybarn.com, $129). Leave as is or fill with plants for a spring-ready touch.
Not that anyone in District 12 is at all preoccupied with appearance; we still felt the need to add this dramatic mirror to our list (horchow.com, $475). Studded scrolls weave around a beveled mirror to create a look that’s dripping gothic romance.
