Hollywood Goes Green: Gwyneth Paltrow
Just when you didn’t think you could hear more about how “green” Hollywood is, we’re bringing you the Hollywood Goes Green series. Sure, we sometimes scratch our heads wondering how celebs who live in 20,000-square-foot homes, charter private jets and own 10 vacation compounds call themselves green because they drive a Prius. But as it turns out, being green means more than using less electricity and carpooling. Check out our weekly pick for the top green celebrities in Hollywood. This week, we look at Gwyneth Paltrow's contribution to the environment.
Gwyneth Paltrow is beautiful and talented. Over the past year, she has showed off her skills as a singer in Country Strong, made us laugh on Saturday Night Live, covered controversial topics on her website Goop and performed live at the London stop of the Glee tour.
But Gwyneth Paltrow does more than act, sing, look good and speak her mind on her website. She's also committed to the environment and living green. We're highlighting a few of the ways Paltrow shows her love for Mother Earth.
Book with Shaklee Foundation
Paltrow wrote a cookbook, My Father's Daughter. While that in and of itself isn't green, she teamed up with the Shaklee Foundation to write it.
The Shaklee Foundation is a natural nutrition company, but one of its main focuses is to take care of the environment. As the company website says, "We were doing it back when green was just a color and biodegradable was barely a word."
The Shakelee Foundation was the first company in the world to obtain climate-neutral certification and one of the very first to create biodegradable cleaning products.
While Paltrow isn't involved with as many large or well-known green causes as some celebrities, she lives green on a daily basis.
"My mom has always been conscious of the environment and health issues. When I was growing up, we would go to farmers markets and even had wheatgrass in the kitchen. She started a curbside recycling program in Santa Monica, California, in the '70s, and each week I drove with her to the recycling center," Paltrow said to author Christopher Gavigan in his book Healthy Child, Healthy World. Having been raised eco-conscious, Paltrow is raising her own children to be eco-conscious. And the best kind of green living is actual green living!
