3 Things you might not know about recycling but should

Today is America Recycles Day. We thought we'd take this opportunity to bring ourselves up-to-date on the topic. Yes, we all know recycling is important — but the specifics often go over our heads. Here is some clarification.

1. You CAN recycle the top of the plastic bottle, as long as you remove it and throw it in separately.

2. You CAN recycle pizza boxes — just not the greasy bottom half! Rip off the top half and recycle away.

3. The biggest tip from recycling pros? Remember that recycling doesn't stop in the kitchen. Most products in your bathroom are also recyclable. Our recycling pro, Bridget Croke from the Closed Loop Fund, says this is the biggest loss we encounter in recycling. We're forgetting more than half of our paper and plastic.

Let's go into the holiday season — "stuff" and all — with a renewed sense of purpose surrounding recycling and what it means for our planet and loved ones. It feels, sometimes, as though recycling has become a tired old song, which is a shame and a serious problem. Recycling saves our communities billions of dollars a year and helps to reduce our environmental impact more than almost anything else we do.

Let's ramp it up people! The solution is too simple to ignore. We can't afford to be lazy.
