World needs women to be equal, says Emma Watson at Davos

Emma Watson continued her quest for female empowerment in Switzerland today and proved yet again that she’s the right person to speak for the women of the world.

Emma Watson certainly hasn’t disappointed in her role as goodwill ambassador for UN Women. The former Harry Potter star gave a passionate speech to politicians and business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland today, urging governments, universities and companies to join a new initiative.

The new year-long “IMPACT 10X10X10” plan is designed to “bring an end to the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally,” said Watson.

She revealed her amazement at the messages of support she has received since she launched the UN campaign #HeForShe in New York last September — from both women and men.

“I’ve been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going, and that they want to make sure that their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have power and equality, economically and politically,” she said.

Watson ended her rousing speech on an uplifting note: “It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments, and in our work places,” she said. “They know that the world is being held back in every way, because they are not. Women share this planet 50/50 and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped.”
