Embellish your Thanksgiving table with floral centerpieces and name cards
Setting a beautiful Thanksgiving table setting doesn't have to be hard or expensive. Dress up simple white plates and neutral napkins with a colorful floral centerpiece and these simple floral name cards.
Making the centerpieces
To create the floral centerpiece, grab a few wooden boxes and various sizes of small glasses. Use smaller and taller glasses like shot glasses and larger, shorter glasses like old baby food jars or small canning jars.
1. Arrange your glasses in the wooden boxes.
Make sure that there are enough in each box so that all of the glasses are touching another glass or the edge of the box so that if you move the box around the water won't spill out of the glasses.
2. Add water and flowers
Fill each glass with water and start arranging your florals!
3. Arrange the flowers
Cut tall floral stems for the center and smaller stems for the outside. Here we used small mums which come in bunches which made filling around the edges easy. Use a variety of florals such as store-bought mums, foraged leafy greens from a nature walk or whatever beautiful buds you have still sprouting in the garden. Assort the flowers within the glasses and the boxes until all the spaces are filled and your centerpiece is done!
Making the name cards
Save a few stems from your centerpiece off to the side for the floral name cards.
- Paper (color that matches your place setting)
- Hole punch
- Paper cutter
- Mini alphabet stamp set
- Black stamp pad
- Floral stems
1. Cut your paper
Start by cutting your paper down to a rectangular shape for the place card settings. Here we used 3.5 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall (big enough to stamp your letters at the bottom and run your stems across the top).
2. Stamp names
Once your rectangular shapes are cut, carefully stamp out the names of each guest on each of the place cards. If you need to, use a plastic ruler at the bottom of the card to keep your stamps lined up straight. Place these toward the bottom of the place card so that you have room on the top for the stems.
3. Punch holes
Once the names are on the place cards, use a hole punch to punch a hole in each corner (at a 45-degree angle).
4. Add flowers
Lastly thread the stems of a few florals through the top of each place card (here we used a purple mum and dried billy ball). Cut the ends of the stems to even them out then place on your table.
Helpful tips: Make your place cards proportionate to your plates and napkins. If you are using smaller plates, make smaller place cards and for large plates, make larger place cards. You are not stuck to the dimensions we listed here. Also get creative with your stamp set. Pick a modern or traditional stamp set based on your style (you can usually find the mini alphabet stamps in the $1 bin at your local craft store in a variety of fonts).
