What to wear is oftentimes a difficult question to answer when you are invited to a party or special event. But what about when it's for your own birthday? The question looms, "What should I wear?"

Consider the location

Is your birthday party a backyard barbecue or a dinner party at the swankiest place in town? If it's a casual affair in your own home or the home of a friend, dress comfortable yet chic. Skip the jeans and tee, opting instead for a dress. The wrap dress is a classic style that flatters most figures. Pair it with flats or low heels if you are going to be standing for most of the evening. For more dressy affairs, put on a pair of high heels and strut your stuff.

Don't be afraid of color

Though your first inclination might be to reach for your favorite little black dress, your birthday party is a great time to show your true colors. Racy red, vibrant purple and sunny yellow are terrific choices. For a daytime party, consider a floral print frock.

Dare to be sexy

Looking sexy doesn't mean dressing sleazy. Don't wear anything that is too tight or short. Instead, exhibit your sexiness with an off-the-shoulder top or high-slit skirt. With all eyes on you, your birthday party is a terrific time to show off your flirty, feminine side (particularly if you are single and looking!).

Add a little extra glitz

Dazzle your guests with a little bit of glitz in the form of jewelry. Diamond drop earrings or a tennis bracelet are classic choices. If you don't have the diamonds, don't worry, good cubic zirconia jewelry will provide the same sparkle at a fraction of the price. Also consider a funky cocktail ring, a large colorful pendant or a chunky cuff bracelet. Statement jewelry is bold and sophisticated.

Get primped by the pros

Instead of spending all afternoon trying to get your hair and makeup just right for your party, leave it to the pros. Treat yourself to a day at the spa. Have a massage (skip the facial, which can cause inflammation) and then get your hair, nails and makeup done -- the full works. For an evening party, consider a fancy updo. Messy updos and half-up/half-down hairstyles are trendy right now for parties. Glam things up with glossy red lipstick and nails to match.
