How to make a Mother’s Day gift basket

Nothing says “love” like handmade. Just as you cherish the coffee-filter flowers, button bracelets and pop-top necklaces your kids lovingly craft for you, your own mom will treasure anything you take the time to create just for her. This year, why not take a break from the usual perfume, flowers and jewelry and show your appreciation with a one-of-a-kind gift basket made just for her?

Fruit BasketSure, you could order one of those pricey, elaborate gift baskets from an upscale retailer — or save big bucks and do it yourself. It’s easy to get started. Pick up a woven basket at the craft store, dollar store or flea market, and line it with colorful shredded paper strips. (If you have a shredder, you can even make your own.) Next, choose a theme, based on one of Mom’s hobbies or interests.

For the gardener Mom

Does your Mom love to play in the dirt? Instead of a basket, start with a watering can or canvas garden tote and fill it with gardening gloves, mini-shovel, apron, insect repellent and sun hat. Space and budget permitting, add potting soil, seeds, a potted plant and even some extra-rich lotion to pamper her hands after a long day in the dirt.

For the stressed Mom

Is your Mom’s typical day one long parade of last-minute interruptions, errands, cranky bosses, ringing phones and boring meetings? Give her the gift of pampering and relaxation with a luxurious spa basket. Start with scented bubble bath, candles, soap and lotion in her favorite fragrance, then add an inflatable bath pillow and over-the-tub tray to keep book, magazine and refreshing adult beverage close at hand. For the ultimate bath experience, add a white cotton spa robe and matching slippers.

For the gourmet Mom

If Mom has champagne tastes — and you have the budget to indulge them — treat her to a gourmet gift basket packed with all her favorite noshes. Stock it with fresh artisan bread, imported cheeses, pâté, stuffed Greek olives, Beluga caviar and some Belgian chocolate for a sweet finish. And don’t forget the French champagne or — if Mom would prefer — an interesting bottle of California pinot grigio she’s been meaning to sample.

For the golfer Mom

Instead of a basket, decorate a bright cooler with her name or initials and load it with bottled water, golf tees and balls, and some high-energy snacks for the 19th hole. A golf-themed photo frame makes the perfect finishing touch.

For the java junkie Mom

Celebrate her caffeine craving with a gift basket presented in a burlap sack stuffed with her favorite flavored coffees or beans, grinder, personalized mug and — if you can find one — framed vintage coffee ad. Complete the mix with a sweet gourmet snack like almond hazelnut biscotti, English toffee, chocolate-dipped pretzels or your own homemade brownies.

For the laid-back Mom

If your Mom is more famous for her made-from-scratch Bloody Marys than her home-baked chocolate-chip cookies, treat her to a Mother’s Day margarita party. Begin with a galvanized bucket or tub (perfect for ice!) and load it with premium tequila, margarita mix, margarita salt and glasses. If you still have room, add some limes, a cutting board and knife, tortilla chips and salsa. For the full Margaritaville experience, throw in her favorite Jimmy Buffet CD.
