How to plan a romantic summer picnic

What’s more romantic than eating al fresco with your man? Not much, we say, and summer is the perfect time for a picnic date. Not sure where to start or what you need? We have you covered with our ultimate picnic-planning tips.

Romantic summer picnic date

Location, location, location

First things first; the key to a great picnic date is finding the ideal spot. You want a place that won’t be too crowded and ideally, not in the middle of a playground. Choose a park with lots of shade and secluded areas. It’s really hard to have a romantic outdoor meal with kids running around, dogs trying to share your sandwiches and Frisbees flying by. Do some research by checking out nearby parks for the best spot before you pack up your basket and go.

Be prepared

Good food and good company are essential and you’ll have those in spades, but you also need a few other key items to pull off the perfect picnic. We’ve listed the most important ones below.

  • Large, durable blanket that is also soft to sit on.
  • A basket to pack up all of your delicious goodies. Choose something large and easy to carry.
  • Umbrellas in case of rain.
  • Cooler packs to keep drinks chilled.
  • Napkins and cutlery.
  • Cups and plates.

Choose food wisely

Since you’re not sitting at a table, you need to be selective about what you choose to bring. The simpler the better when it comes to perfect picnic fare. We suggest hearty, healthy stuffed pita sandwiches (much easier to eat and less messy than traditional sandwiches). Stuff your picnic pockets with roast chicken, Swiss cheese, avocado, mustard and sprouts, or roasted vegetables, sliced tomato and goat cheese. Pack a pasta veggie-filled salad, lemonade, brownies for dessert and a bottle of wine and you’re all set.

board gamesAdd entertainment

No picnic is complete without some added entertainment. Bring music (your iPod with portable speakers), a ball to toss around, board games, a deck of cards or whatever else you can think of to whittle away the post-dinner hours together.
