Welcome to Love Happy, where we help you successfully navigate the ups and downs of relationship life and share simple tips for keeping love fun, fresh and on track. In this installment, we look at the importance of befriending your guy’s best pals.
Bonding with The boys
|
I’m pretty lucky in that I like most of my guy’s closest friends (minus a few annoying exceptions). We’ve been together long enough now that I consider them my friends as well, and I’d like to think the feeling is mutual. But I know it’s not always easy to bond with your boyfriend’s BFFs and that sometimes it can take a while to feel like you belong among his friends. What I’m here to tell you is that even if you don’t take an instant liking to the guys he hangs out with most, it’s important to at least try to get to know them and develop a comfort level when you’re all together. There are a few key reasons for this.
Hanging with the guys is fun
You may never like all of his friends and you don’t have to, but getting to know – and ideally like – a few key people that seem most important to your man is definitely worth your time. If you’re comfortable with the boys and they’re comfortable with you, there’s a lot of fun to be had. Don’t get me wrong – I love my girls, but on nights when it’s just me, my guy and all his friends, I have a really good time. They’re relaxed, they make me laugh and they don’t need much to have a good time. A backyard BBQ or night of hanging out on a patio is all they need to have a fun night. The only time I don’t want to be part of the posse is when the video games come out – NOT my idea of a good time!
You can never have too many friends
Why turn down the opportunity to make new friends? If you have yet to get to know your guy’s best pals beyond sharing a few words here and there, think of it as a chance to connect with some new, potentially great people. You don’t have to force it with anyone you genuinely don’t get along with or who rubs you the wrong way, but any of the guys you meet could likely become your friends too and the more the merrier, I say. The more friends you have, the happier you’ll be!
It’s easier on everyone
Being at least comfortable with your guy’s besties will make life easier for everyone – him, you and his friends. There’s nothing worse than feeling out of place when you’re around certain people or like you don’t belong among his friends. The happier you are when his buddies are over, or if he invites a few of them out the next time the two of you go out for drinks, the happier you and your guy will be. The last thing he wants to do is to have to choose between his lady love and his friends, so he’d be thrilled if you bonded with his closest friends.
