When we talk about mental healthcare in 2020, one of the more complicated and difficult parts of the puzzle is how we talk about suicide. Given stats that 1.4 million adults in the United States attempted suicide in 2019 alone, according to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), speaking about these issues (with an emphasis on stories of hope — and paths to get support for people struggling with their mental health) is all too important.
In the latest episode of Red Table Talk on Facebook Watch, Jada, Willow and Gammy hear the stories of people who survived suicide attempts and now share messages of hope and resilience for people currently struggling with their own mental health.
Emma’s story is harrowing — but it is also part of the larger picture of how we can better hold and support members of our communities — family, friends, colleagues — struggling with suicidal ideation and mental health issues and, ultimately, prevent more tragic deaths by suicide.
