Gabi Gregg Talks Body Positivity & Getting the Fashion Industry's Attention

When Gabi Gregg first started writing about body positivity in 2008, it wasn’t yet a mainstream term, and most of her support came from the online community. Now almost a decade later, she’s a leading voice not only on body acceptance, but also fashion – the very industry that initially shut her out.

“I was just a young fat girl who couldn’t find clothing and wanted to share the resources I did have with other people,” she told the audience at BlogHer17 in Orlando. “I wanted to share my struggle and my outfits at the same time.”

For so long, Gregg explained, there wasn’t much in the way of fashion advice or guidance for plus-sized women, and what was there was “all about hiding and minimizing,” like saying to wear black and not stripes.

Thanks to efforts from women like Gregg, even in a few short years, the options available in plus-size fashion – including swimwear – have increased exponentially. When her first swimwear line – a collaboration with Swimsuitsforall quickly sold out after it was launched, other retailers took notice.
