Why sushi and drinks is the best way to guarantee a second date

What’s the best type of first date to increase your odds of getting a second date? Take your crush out for sushi and drinks. Yup, research shows that sushi and drinks is the best first date to secure a second.

If you prequalify your date, dinner is the best first date option, and sushi — which is simultaneously casual, fun and sophisticated — ups your chances of a second date. Why is sushi so successful? Here’s what I think:

1. You’re already sure you like them

If someone chooses to spend the money on a sushi date, it’s usually because they are pretty sure it will be a good date. And the best way to be pretty sure that it will be a good date is to have a real, substantive conversation. This type of conversation eliminates people who are obviously not a good fit with you. It starts the process of building a solid foundation and, therefore, a connection. The amount of pre-qualifying done before a date is often reflected in the amount of effort, time, and money devoted to the date itself.

2. It’s casual

Despite the fact that sushi often costs more, there’s less pressure at a sushi restaurant than there is at an upscale Italian establishment. The casual style allows for more relaxed energy, therefore allowing everyone to feel more comfortable to be themselves — and authenticity is sexy.

3. It encourages sharing

Sushi is often about sharing, which creates closeness. It also allows for conversation about food preferences or sharing stories about past sushi experiences. Plus, you have a little sake and — Kanpai! — the mood is instantly lighter!

4. It’s sophisticated and expensive

You want to feel sexy, special and important. The upscale sophistication and higher price point of sushi makes you feel that way. When you feel sexy and special, you want more of that feeling. Even if there isn’t the instant spark of chemistry, you are initially attracted by how someone makes you feel, as well as the conversation-based deeper connection that you share.
