If you think women fall in love more easily than men, you might want to think again. At least that’s what a new study from Häagen-Dazs (Yes, Häagen-Dazs) says.
Häagen-Dazs ice cream and The School of Life asked 2,000 adults about relationships and discovered that more than half of men say they’ve loved more than one person their lifetime. Only 45 percent of women say the same.
In fact, 47 percent of women say they have only had one love. For men, that number was 39 percent. So what’s up with that?
In some ways it makes a lot of sense. Maybe women fall more deeply the first time or they mistake love for something else. I know I certainly did. When I was in my early 20s, I had two boyfriends I thought I loved at the time. Later, looking back and comparing that to what I feel for my husband, it seems sort of absurd. My husband is real love. They were nothing.
So maybe it is that?
Also, it is relevant how old these people are. At 36 and single, you probably have had more than one love. At 21? Maybe not. Falling in love easily can be a good quality, but it can also be dangerous if it is a capricious kind of love. Another thing the survey makes me wonder is what quality of love these men are having.
Is this deep, everlasting, through-thick-and-thin love? Or is this OMG, I-love-this-person-so-much infatuation? It could be either. And everyone defines love differently.
So is there any takeaway here? Not really. It’s a silly and fun survey, but without more information, it’s hard to know exactly what “love” means. As for me, it’s one. But that’s a revision. I could easily say two, depending on how we define love. So there.
