Is a beach body realistic this summer?

Summer means hitting the local outdoor pool or the beach. It also means wearing your swimsuit, which may leave you feeling nervous or unhappy with your body. You tell yourself this summer will be different and that you’ll finally have that beach-ready body to show off in a string bikini. But setting your goals too high and trying to achieve them too fast isn’t a good idea. Here’s how you can be realistic about your weight loss goals this summer and why you should be.

Setting goals too high can leave you disappointed

Telling yourself you’re going to lose at least 30 or 40 pounds for this summer as well as turn your belly into a rock-hard six-pack all in a matter of weeks is not realistic. If you set your weight loss goals too high and try to meet them too fast, you’re bound to become discouraged. This may even leave you wondering if there’s a point to working out or eating healthier. Of course, you should set goals; just be sure they are realistic so you’re not left disappointed.

Set short-term goals

Taking little steps to improve your body and health is a better approach than setting unrealistic goals. This means setting short-term goals that are achievable, such as going to the gym at least three times a week for the next month or so, and then going on from there. When you take baby steps, your weight loss and fitness goals are less overwhelming, making you more likely to stick to trying to meet them.

Seek advice

If you’re not happy with specific parts of your body — for example, if you want to work to make your arms firmer — ask a professional trainer at your gym to show you some exercises that target the arms. Working on specific parts of your body that you are insecure about during your exercise routine will get you results and give you more confidence.

Get your skin summer-ready

Moisturizing and exfoliating your skin regularly means soft, sexy skin you’ll be happy to show off this summer. You might even consider adding a touch of shine to your skin by using a body lotion with a bit of shimmer in it. This reflects light and gives your skin an extra glow. Try a sunless tanner if you want to have a little bit of colour before donning your swimsuit.

Be confident

Remember, the most attractive thing about someone wearing a bikini at the beach or pool is that they are comfortable in it. If you believe you look attractive in your swimsuit, then your confidence will show. If the thought of wearing a string bikini scares you, work your way up to it. Try wearing a tankini and skirt or a one-piece swimsuit before finally donning a bikini. Put that swimsuit on with a confident smile, and enjoy the summer!
