A simple way to cleanse

Cleansing your body from the inside doesn’t have to mean an extreme detox or fast. Try some of these simple ways to cleanse your body from the inside.

Eating right

Everyone’s on some sort of cleanse or detox lately. The good news is you don’t have to go to extremes to give your diet and your system a bit of a cleanup. Try one or all of these three strategies to give your system a boost.

Eat how you do, but just a bit healthier

If you change your diet too drastically, it’ll be difficult to maintain and you’ll fall right back to where you started. Why not try taking baby steps instead? With every meal or snack, look at what you normally have and step it up in some way. Instead of your regular pasta, switch to a whole-grain pasta. Examine the salad you’re having; what could you add or change to boost it nutritionally? Perhaps it’s lacking in protein, so consider adding some tuna or chicken strips, or add healthy fats and crunch by topping it with some nuts. Or, switch your salad dressing to something less fatty.

Cut out foods that don’t make you feel good

Cookies and cupcakes may be sweet and enjoyable while you’re digging in, but that sluggish crash and burn you experience later is not. Same goes for that bread basket — you know you’ve ruined your dinner more than a few times by digging in so deep it leaves you bloated and uncomfortable. Give up these foods temporarily and monitor how it makes you feel. Keep in mind that you don’t want to do a complete elimination diet without the help of a nutritionist, as you may inadvertently damage your health by depriving yourself of certain nutrients and minerals.

Look at the balance of foods you’re eating

Are you getting enough vegetables and fruit? We need 5 to 10 servings a day so these, rather than your protein, should dominate your plate. So, rather than a giant steak with a baked potato, opt for a green salad and eat only a third of the steak. (Bonus: you’ll have leftovers for another meal.) Certain veggies and fruits also help keep your liver humming along efficiently (the liver helps detox the body) so getting a good range of them in your diet is always beneficial.
