It’s official! We now have a selfie to commemorate every life event: weddings, babies, funerals (seriously)… and divorces?
Yep, divorce selfies are now a thing that split-up couples are doing to celebrate the dissolution of their marriages. And naturally, they quickly upload the pictures to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to commiserate — or celebrate — about their new single status.
Count Keith Hinson and Michelle Knight as one of the couples celebrating their split with a selfie.
“Here’s to the most friendly, respectful and loving split imaginable. We smile not because it’s over, but because it happened,” Orlando-based Hinson wrote under the shot of the pair, posted to Instagram. It looks as joyous as some couples’ wedding photos.
“Michelle and I have a good sense of humor about this,” Hinson told the Huffington Post.
Apparently their friends and family do, too. The photo has racked up a bunch of “likes” and comments on Facebook.
“Friends and family have always thought we were a bit unconventional with this process,” Knight added. “They first balked at our dog custody arrangement, which requires us to see each other each weekend with the dog! But ultimately, I think they are proud of how we are handling things. It makes it easier on our friends for us to be friendly — there’s no need to choose sides.”
However, other divorce selfies aren’t so happy-go-lucky.
Writer Monica Bielanko snapped a split selfie with her soon-to-be ex as they moved the last of their belongings out of the house they shared. It started off as a sort of morbid joke, but now all Bielanko sees is sadness when she sees the photo on social media.
“The selfie shows two people slogging through the worst time in their lives, trying to make the best of it, but also wondering what the f*** happened here,” she wrote in a YourTango.com essay. “In that way, it ended up being one of the most honest selfies I’ve ever taken. No primping, no posing. Just a camera up and SNAP.”
“This is what separation feels like,” she added.
