We don’t know how to explain it, but we just can’t get enough of Jamie Oliver. From those of us who grew up watching the British chef on his show The Naked Chef, to those who found Oliver thanks to his more recent projects like Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution or his just-released cook book One: Simple One-Pan Wonders, Oliver always keeps us hungry for more. Hungry for more recipes, more kitchen tips, and more funny anecdotes told along the way.
We were lucky enough to sit down with Jamie Oliver recently to ask him all sorts of questions that we’ve been dying to know the answers to. From his kids’ favorite recipes from his new cookbook One (the squidgy croissant loaf is a family favorite, along with the clementine roast duck), to unique ingredients the chef keeps in his fridge, we got all of the most important deets.
Oliver also told us the one kitchen tool he can’t live without: a mortar and pestle. “Any half-decent cook would have one, and if they haven’t got one they need to get one,” Oliver shared. “It’s two bits of rock,” he went on, and “it’s probably the oldest kitchen gadget on the planet.” Oliver uses his to make all sorts of dressings, marinates, and dips, and for crushing up spices and herbs to use in various recipes. We like this heavyweight, 4-cup capacity mortar and pestle set from Gorilla Grip.
Another fun tidbit? Oliver hates peeling garlic cloves just as much as we do. The stars really are just like us!
Thanks to his approachable take on cooking delicious and nutritious food at home, Jamie Oliver has been a staple for us when looking for recipes. Now, we can also thank him for his advice on kitchen tools, for his insights into getting his kids to help in the kitchen, and for his solidarity with those of us who can’t stand getting those papery garlic skins stuck to our knife and fingertips every time we cook.
