We talked with Gisela Lowenstein, a mother of three, a breast cancer survivor, and the creator of The Glow System, the secret to an organized and clean home. Here are Lowenstein’s top five home cleaning products.

Here are Lowenstein’s top five home cleaning products.

5 Must-have vegan-friendly cleaning products

1. Biodegradable detergent

Lowenstein suggests using biodegradable detergent or dishwashing liquid surfaces in bathrooms as well as the kitchen to eliminate grease and bacteria.

2. White vinegar

White vinegar has a number of cleaning uses in the home.
 
Use white vinegar to:

    t

  • Rinse clothes that discolor easily, such as reds or blues. Simply use 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water — and hand rinse.
  • t

  • Remove stickers and crayon marks.
  • t

  • Clean glass and mirrors with 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water.
  • t

  • Unclog drains.
  • t

  • Clean floors (dilute with water first).
  • t

  • Mix into a paste with salt and shortening to scour pots and pans.

Just be sure you never mix vinegar with bleach.

3. Baking soda

Baking soda is another one of Lowenstein’s favorite DIY cleaning products.

Cleaning uses for baking soda:

  • Place a box of baking soda in closets and the refrigerator to removes odors.
  • t

  • Mix baking soda with water to make a paste for cleaning ovens, freezers and refrigerators.
  • t

  • Mix baking soda with 1 cup of vinegar to 4 parts water to shine silverware.

4. Microfiber cloth

Stock up on microfiber cloths for your daily cleaning, especially if your family suffers from allergies. Lowenstein recommends using cloths dry or with water to grab dust without the use of cleaning products. The cleaning expert adds, “It is the ideal product for cleaning for those suffering from allergies and asthma, and it won’t scratch surfaces.”

5. Borax

Borax sounds like a harsh chemical, but it is actually a safe, non-toxic multi-purpose cleaner. Lowenstein recommends using it as a laundry booster and to clean fabrics: “Dampen clothes, mattresses, or other fabrics with water, sprinkle with Borax, let dry, and vacuum or rinse.”
