Broiled Grapefruit

Warm, juicy and delectably spiced, broiled grapefruit is one of my favorite naturally vegan breakfast recipes. This recipe features red grapefruit but any variety will become a warm, sweet, caramelized vegan treat. Serve as a vegan breakfast or vegan dessert — yes, they are that delicious.

Broiled Grapefruit

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 3 medium-sized grapefruit, cut in half
  • t

  • 1 tablespoon agave
  • t

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • t

  • 2 tablespoons rum
  • t

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • t

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • t

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • t

  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Preheat broiler and set a broiler rack in the upper half of the oven.
  2. t

  3. Place grapefruit cut-side up on a roasting pan.
  4. t

  5. In a small bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients until brown sugar dissolves.
  6. t

  7. Drizzle the brown sugar mixture over the top of each grapefruit half.
  8. t

  9. Broil until brown sugar mixture starts to caramelize and grapefruit is warm. Serve immediately.
