How to make healthy birthday treats
There's no better way to celebrate a birthday than with family, friends and a whole bunch of yummy goodies. While cupcakes and candy are delicious, the nutrition facts on these bad boys are downright scary.
Fortunately, we've come up with a scrumptious birthday treat that will not only satisfy your kids' sweet tooth but will also be much healthier for them.
What you'll need:
- low-fat yogurt
- Popsicle sticks
- wax paper
- chocolate/yogurt chips
- chopped nuts
Step 1: Prep it up
Place a sheet of wax paper on the cutting board. Once you have your nonstick base ready, peel the bananas and cut them in half. Peeling and cutting them all at once will save a lot of time, especially if you're feeding a little army of birthday-goers!
Step 2: Stick it
Put a Popsicle stick in each banana half. For more birthday fun, use colored Popsicle sticks -- these will also help kids keep track of which one is theirs. Dip the banana halves in yogurt and turn to make sure the whole banana is evenly covered. Lay they banana halves gently on the wax paper.
Step 3: Top it off
Now the fun part begins! Add chocolate chips, sprinkles, or chopped nuts over the banana halves. Mix and match the toppings -- make some with only chocolate chips and others a combination of the three. Along with more flavor, toppings will make these treats more festive and appealing to kids. Finally, put the completed bananas in the freezer for one to two hours and take them out once it's time to eat.
