3 Salsa recipes for Cinco de Mayo

If there’s one thing we Americans love, it’s Mexican food. Whether it’s enjoying an authentic bite at a local mom and pop shop or gorging on some Tex-Mex at On the Border, we can’t get enough of it.

And what’s our favorite thing to indulge in when we go out for Mexican? Salsa! In fact, salsa is the number two condiment in the country! So this Cinco de Mayo, pay homage to this extremely popular dip by enjoying these unique salsa recipes!

There’s nothing better than the traditional restaurant style salsa; however, the same ol’ stuff can be kind of boring. Spruce up your Cinco de Mayo festivities this year with unique salsa recipes, like green verde or strawberry avocado! Serve with your favorite chips and strongest margarita!

Strawberry avocado salsa

Yields about 1-1/2 cups salsa


  • 1 cup chopped strawberries
  • 3/4 medium avocado, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chopped red onion
  • 1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon lime zest
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Mix strawberries, avocado, onion and jalapeno pepper together in a bowl. Stir in lime juice, lime zest and salt and pepper to taste. Eat immediately or cover and chill.

Green verde salsa

Green verde salsa

Serves about 6


  • 11 tomatillos, husked and cleaned
  • 2 jalapenos
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 white onion, chopped
  • 1 bunch cilantro, chopped
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime zest


  1. In a pot, place tomatillos and jalapenos in enough water to cover them and bring to a simmer. Heat until tomatillos brown and then remove with a spoon. Place in a blender and blend until smooth. Add garlic and salt and blend again until smooth. Add in chopped cilantro, pepper, lime juice and lime zest; blend again until cilantro is mixed well.
  2. Remove mixture from the blender and place in a serving dish. Stir in chopped onion and enjoy!

Mojito melon salsa

Mojito mango salsa

Serves 3


  • 1 cup chopped watermelon
  • 3/4 cup chopped cantaloupe
  • 3/4 cup chopped honeydew
  • 1/2 cucumber, chopped
  • 1/4 red onion, chopped
  • 10 mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Serve with chips and enjoy!
