Getting creative for date night ideas can be especially tricky in the winter when it is too cold to enjoy time outside. If you don’t know how to cook, it can be even more of a challenge. Do a little searching online and find a professional chef to give a cooking lesson in your home. You may even be able to talk the chef from your favorite restaurant into coming over for the right price. If you include other couples in the occasion, you could all split the cost. Be sure to have plenty of wine on hand to ensure that your guests are relaxed and having fun. The activity will take up most of the evening and it might include a delicious dinner, depending on how good of students you are.

Cap off the evening by making a warm beverage and enjoying it with your guests by the fire. My favorite warm cocktail recipe is Hot Buttered Rum. Any excuse you can use to drink butter and not feel bad about it is worth doing. Hot Buttered Rum is slightly sweet with a hint of a salty taste. You can also substitute whisky for the rum if you prefer the taste of that over rum. Traditional recipes use water, but I decided to use milk for a richer and creamier taste.

Creamy hot buttered rum

Serves 1


  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 ounces of rum
  • Boiling milk or cream


  1. In a small bowl, cream together butter, sugar and spices until they are combined. Form into a ball.
  2. Pour three ounces of rum into a mug and top with boiling milk. Add the butter mix to the top and stir to melt the butter. Serve immediately.
