Company officials from Minnesota-based Cargill, Inc. have recalled fresh and frozen ground turkey products — 36 million pounds worth — due to possible salmonella contamination. One person has died and about 76 others across 26 states have become ill as a result of the salmonella outbreak.
After Cargill, Inc. initiated its own investigation, along with an Agriculture Department investigation and information from the CDC, it halted turkey production at its plant in Springdale, Ark. Recalled turkey includes meat produced from Feb. 20, 2011 to Aug. 2, 2011.
States with the highest reported number of illnesses included Michigan and Ohio with 10 each; Texas with nine; Illinois seven; California six; and Pennsylvania five.
Signs and guidelines
Common symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever 12 to 72 hours within eating a contaminated product. The CDC advises that you contact your healthcare provider if you think you’ve become ill from contaminated turkey.
The CDC notes that the outbreak strain of Salmonella Hadar, which may be associated with this recall, is “resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics, which can increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals.”
