An Exclusive Look Inside Sutton Foster’s Fridge

Maybe you know her from one of her hit Broadway musicals or maybe you love her character Liza Miller on Younger, either way, we’ve been entertained and dazzled by Sutton Foster for years now but the award-winning actress also happens to be a diehard foodie. We recently chatted with Foster and not only did she give us a peek inside her fridge, she told us all about her favorite (and least favorite) foods and the meals she cooks for herself and her daughter Emily.

SheKnows: Tell us a little bit about what’s in your fridge. 

Sutton Foster: My family loves berries, grapes, bananas and apples. We also have lots of produce and make sure to stock up on veggies, especially broccoli and cucumbers. It’s key for me to always have peanut butter and jelly, especially for my daughter, Emily. And, you can never go wrong by always having eggs in the house. I always have to have seltzer.

SK: What about your freezer?

SF: We make smoothies quite frequently, so we like to stock bags of frozen berries in the freezer. One of Emily’s favorite dinners is chicken fingers, so we buy chicken fingers at the grocery store. They are so easy to make. For dessert, we also both love cookies. We have so much fun making them together. Emily and I make our own home-made cookie dough and then we store it in the freezer, so we can make cookies together whenever we want or when we are craving something sweet. My freezer has LACTAID ice cream — ice cream is definitely a staple in our house! It might come as a surprise, but I keep my face roller in the freezer. The coldness wakes me up for those early mornings and it’s great for depuffing.

SK: Are there any items that you always make sure to keep in stock? 

SF: I always stock LACTAID milk. I grew up drinking whole milk and then moved away from it as I realized I was dairy sensitive, and it was causing me discomfort. Now with a two-year-old daughter, milk has become a staple in my home again so I’m glad I’ve discovered LACTAID®, which is 100% real milk, just without the lactose, so my whole family can enjoy milk without it bothering our stomachs.

SK: What was your most memorable meal?

SF: My most memorable meal was when I went to The French Laundry. My husband and I were welcomed with a note from Thomas Keller. It was the coolest thing. I even framed his note. We took a trip to wine country basically to just go to his restaurant. You can only book your reservation a few weeks in advance, so once we got a reservation, we immediately booked a trip. It was an epic four-hour meal and the gardens on the property were so beautiful. We got to walk through them as the sun was setting. It was one I will never forget.  

SK: Can you give us an example of one of your favorite weeknight meals? 

SF: One of my favorite go-to meals for the family is Panko-fried chicken. We usually make it with rice or roasted broccoli.  Everyone in the house loves it and it’s super easy to make. When my father comes over, we always beg him to make burgers, and he also makes the most delicious French fries. Eating burgers with my dad has been a tradition since I was little, so I wanted to introduce that to Emily too.

SK: What would you consider the ultimate comfort food?

SF: Honestly, it would be my father’s burgers. We dress them up with onion, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, avocado and bacon if available – I love the works!

SK: What’s the one ingredient you hate to work with or encounter in someone else’s dish? 

SF: I really don’t like eggplant. I don’t like the texture, skin and mushiness. It’s a weird vegetable to me. I’m also just generally not a fan of the squash family.

SK: What does a typical breakfast look like for you?

SF: When I don’t have an omelet, it’s usually cereal with milk. I like granola or something extra crunchy.

SK: What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten?

SF: Whenever I travel, especially to Europe, I like to try everything on the table. Some of the strangest things I’ve tried have been abroad, including local cuisine and foreign meats.
