Dole Fresh Vegetables has announced a voluntary recall of its bagged spinach in 13 states.
It hasn’t yet been announced how much spinach has been contaminated, only that the spinach affected by the recall is coded A27409B and A27409A, with the “Enjoy By” date of October 15, 2015, and the UPC 7143000976.
The salmonella was detected in a random testing of the product. The spinach was distributed in 13 states: Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
So far no illnesses have been reported as a result of ingesting the product included in the recall. Symptoms of salmonella infection are mostly gastrointestinal and can be serious in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
This recall falls on the heels of what seems like a billion others this year — chicken, cucumbers, cheese. As a consumer, it’s frustrating to not be able to trust that the food you’re buying for yourself or your family is safe to eat.
Luckily the Justice Department seems to agree. It announced earlier this year that it could start pressing criminal and civil penalties on companies that distribute contaminated food. Associate Attorney General Stuart Delery told Associated Press, “We have made a priority holding individuals and companies responsible when they fail to live up to their obligations that they have to protect the safety of the food that all of us eat.” Hopefully this move on the Justice Department’s part will make food manufacturers take safety concerns more seriously in the future.
It’s time to change things so that we can catch these dangerous products before they hit store shelves instead of after.
