(UPDATE) Brace yourselves, there might be a pumpkin shortage this Thanksgiving
If you're lucky enough to see canned pumpkin on your grocery store shelf, snag it. It might not be there in a few weeks.
UPDATE: The pumpkin shortage in the Midwest will not be impacting Farmer’s Market Foods, one of the largest suppliers of organic canned pumpkin puree. The company has stated that it will not be shorting customers or increasing prices. "Our gourmet pumpkin is looking gorgeous this year! We will not have any shortages," says Karla Chambers, co-owner of Farmer’s Market Foods, an Oregon-based, family-owned and operated farm.
Pumpkin growers are warning that there might not be enough of a supply from this year's harvest to last through Thanksgiving. Yes, that's right — die-hard pumpkin pie lovers, this year we're facing a potential holiday pumpkin shortage.
Apparently just about all the pumpkins we rely on for everything from jack-o'-lanterns to pumpkin bread are grown within a single, 90-mile area outside Peoria, Illinois, and heavy rains in June wiped out about a third of this year's crops.
Canned pumpkin brand Libby told ABC News that once the last of the 2015 cans are shipped, that will be all the company has until the 2016 harvest.
But before you start to get sad about the prospect of a pumpkin-less Thanksgiving 2015, maybe you should consider all the other delicious treats that could fill in and take pumpkin's place. You might just find a new holiday fave.
