Hilarious Pizza Hut commercial warns against selfie stick abuse (VIDEO)
Pizza Hut's new PSA tackles the tragedy of selfie sticks head-on.
We love a little bit of good snark, and Pizza Hut is more than willing to deliver (ha!) with its new commercial on the dangers that come with the tragic proliferation of one of our generation's most abominable inventions: the selfie stick.
The commercial is shot like a documentary and warns of the many dangers of the selfie stick, which can cause all kinds of upset and chaos:
"By moving the camera away from the central subject of the selfie, selfie sticks create the illusion that other objects, places and even people exist."
Besides being an excellent burn, this little line of faux concern describes just one of the many dangers awaiting those who use their telescopic, friend-repelling, narcissistic devices. There are plenty of potential hazards you'll encounter, from lightning strikes...
... to destroyed lemonade stands...
... to wrecked houses.
But why? Why is Pizza Hut doing this, besides the fact that it's obviously hilarious and could possibly spawn an indignant #notallselfiesticks hashtag tantrum? Well, to sell pizza, of course.
To sell the 2-foot-long Big Flavor Dipper Pizza, to be exact. To quote the pizza delivery man in this commercial, we need a pizza just a little shy of the size of your average toddler because, "Bigger parties mean bigger selfies, which leads to bigger selfie sticks, which leads to bigger selfies, which leads to bigger parties and bigger pizza! This is 2 feet of pizza, man!"
In this way, Pizza Hut isn't just mocking you and your selfie stick — it's also mocking itself, which I think we all can appreciate. After all, Pizza Hut has brought you all kinds of mockable food, like cheeseburger-stuffed pizza crust and Doritos Crunchy Crust, so it only makes sense that it would want to poke a little fun at itself as well.
Besides, the commercial does have one thing absolutely right: Selfie sticks are dumb no matter how many Kardashians endorse them, hard as that is to believe. All kinds of people and events are starting to ban the obnoxious device, so Pizza Hut must be on to something.
The bottom line is that Pizza Hut is here for you, selfie-stick abusers. There's nothing whatsoever to be ashamed of. With a little education and awareness, you'll be back to taking simple selfies in the bathroom mirror, with your lips contorted into a duck's bill.
One day at a time, everyone. One day at a time.
