Orange chicken meatballs are a healthier twist on your favorite takeout

Love orange chicken? So do we, but we don’t love the fact that it’s deep-fried and full of grease. Use ground chicken breast to make baked meatballs in this simple and healthier take on orange chicken.

I love getting takeout, especially when times get crazy or chaotic and there is no time to cook. But what if I told you that by using ground chicken breast and jazzing up bottled orange sauce you can easily and quickly replicate orange chicken at home but in a healthier way?

orange chicken meatballs

Here I used lean ground chicken breast, added fresh garlic, ginger, some breadcrumbs and a little bit of hoisin sauce and made meatballs that I baked. Once baked, these chicken meatballs take a dive into a bottled orange sauce that I jazzed up with some fresh ingredients such as lime juice, orange juice and rice vinegar.

Enjoy these meatballs over steamed rice alongside a green veggie such as spinach, broccoli, asparagus or a combination of steamed veggies. You’ll never miss that oil-drenched chicken after enjoying this healthy substitute.

  • 1 cup bottled orange chicken sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1 lime, juiced and zested

  3. Using a small cookie scoop or a tablespoon, make the meatballs, trying to keep them all uniform in size.
  4. Place the meatballs on the baking sheet, and bake uncovered for 30 minutes or until the centers are completely baked.
  5. While the meatballs are baking, add all the sauce ingredients to a large bowl, and mix well.
  6. Remove the meatballs from the oven, and place them into the bowl with the orange sauce. Very gently toss the meatballs in the sauce, covering the meatballs evenly.
  7. Serve the meatballs warm over fresh, steamed rice and alongside vegetables.
