No tapas party is complete without these patatas bravas with spicy and smoky tomato sauce on the menu. They're perfectly portioned (and delicious) for a Spanish-themed get-together.

Patatas bravas with spicy and smoky tomato sauce makes a great side dish

One of my favorite types of meals is tapas. I just love to share small plates and try a little of this and a little of that.

You should include this Spanish-inspired dish of patatas bravas to any tapas menu. The potatoes are crispy on the outside and tender inside. Drizzle them with the spicy and smoky tomato sauce to really amp up the flavor of these golden potatoes.

This dish is also a fabulous side dish on a Meatless Monday. The potatoes and sauce are easy to make and add to a satisfying meal alongside just about anything — like a hearty green salad or grilled tofu.

These Spanish-style potatoes are lovely, golden gems. The sauce served on the side gets its kick from smoked paprika and a bit of hot sauce. Decide what level of heat you're comfortable with, and kick it up or dial it down.

Serves 6

Prep time: 8 minutes | Cook time: 27 minutes | Total time: 35 minutes

For the potatoes

  • 3 baking potatoes, peeled and diced into 2-inch cubes
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For the tomato sauce

  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh cilantro leaves, torn, plus extra for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin
  • 3-4 dashes hot sauce, or to taste

For the potatoes

  1. To a large skillet over medium-low heat, add the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the potatoes, salt and black pepper. Stir, and cook for about 15 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.
  2. Increase the heat to medium-high, and cook, stirring, for approximately 8 to 12 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  3. Remove from the skillet, and serve with the tomato sauce on the side.

For the tomato sauce

  1. As the potatoes cook, combine all the ingredients in a food processor, and blend until smooth. Taste, and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  2. Serve with the warm potatoes.
