As much as you would like to, it isn’t possible to buy elaborate gifts for every person on your holiday list. But a sweet, handmade creation like this one will show them you care.

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts

  1. Layer the ingredients into a jar in the order listed.
  2. Create a tag with the following instructions: “Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Thoroughly combine 1/2 a cup softened butter, 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a small bowl. Pour contents of the jar into a large bowl, and stir to distribute ingredients evenly. Add in wet ingredients, and combine. Drop spoonfuls onto a non-stick baking tray, leaving enough room for cookies to spread. Bake in the oven for 10–12 minutes — or until edges and bottoms are golden-brown. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool.”
  3. Attach the tag to the jar with a ribbon.

To personalize this gift, include a special note for the person you’re giving it to. You can also add some extra colour by placing a square of fabric over the lid of the jar and securing it with the ribbon.
