Warm soda? Ugh. When you get home and all you are craving is an ice cold drink and instead find a warm can of coke, you may think about skipping the drink altogether. Instead of nixing it, why not chill it in two minutes. This quick and easy trick will have you enjoying a refreshingly cold drink (canned or bottled) in just minutes — and all you need is a bowl, ice, water and a secret ingredient [salt].
Fill a bowl with water
Start off by filling one large mixing bowl with enough water to cover the sodas you need to chill — leave a few centimetres of room at the top so you won’t have a mess on your hands. [If you need to cool more then a few cans you can use anything from a big drink cooler for a couple six packs to a large plastic cup for a single coke.]
Add ice to the water and fill it up about 3/4 of the way — you don’t want to fill it any higher.
Mix in the salt
Sprinkle in some table salt — about a tablespoon for a smaller container and 1/2 cup for a cooler. The salt will lower the freezing temperature of the water making it a more effective cooling agent.
Stir the mixture to combine the ingredients. Next, add the can or cans and carefully stir them around every 10 seconds or so for two minutes. [Make sure to stir gently so that the soda won”t fizz when you open it.]
Rinse and enjoy
Wait about two minutes, take the cans out of the mixture and rinse under plain tap water — this will keep the salty mixture from creeping into your drink.
Now you know how to chill coke really fast!
Last minute tip
Diet drinks and heat don’t mix!
For diet coke and diet soda lovers: Aspartame [aka Nutrasweet] breaks down in heat — so if your soda is left in the car or anywhere else warmer than 30 C, you will be left with a really gross drink, that won’t even taste okay chilled. This would count for Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Diet Mountain Dew, Sprite Free, etc. However, sodas sweetened with Splenda, shouldn’t have this problem.
