Our nation’s weight is a health crisis

Is it any surprise that the majority of Americans are overweight or obese when you think about all the supersized meals, slurps, and packaged snacks that are not only readily available but also cheap? The worst of it is that our nation’s children are also suffering from weight problems and weight-related chronic illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around a third of all adults and 17 percent of all children are considered to be obese. Drastic dieting and all the “miracle” pills, potions, and plans are not long-term — and in some cases, not even short-term — solutions. But small lifestyle changes can be the start to healthy weight loss and keeping it off. A key change can be in snack habits.

Healthy snacking habits can start at the vending machine

Whether you grab a candy bar from the convenience store, a low-fat muffin at the coffee bar, or a bag of gummi candy from the vending machine, your snacking behavior has a significant impact on your weight. Snacking is part of our culture — but it doesn’t have to contribute to our culture’s propensity for weight gain.

“Research shows that snacking makes up around 27 percent of a child’s daily calories,” explains Dan Negroni, the chief executive officer and president of Fresh Healthy Vending. “This means that it is crucial that we teach children to opt for healthy snacks. And that starts by us adults modeling healthy snacking behavior.” Fresh Healthy Vending is the largest healthy vending company in North America that is revolutionizing vending machines by filling them with healthy, natural, and organic food and beverage options, including fresh fruits and vegetables, smoothies, yogurts, 100-percent juices, granola bars, baked chips and more.

Negroni recommends choosing healthy snacks to help tackle obesity. “It used to be difficult to find healthy snacks, especially if you were on the go,” adds Negroni. “But that’s simply not the case anymore. And we are proud to say that we are the ones that have helped make such a change. Healthy snacking is just a couple of button-pushes away, today.” His top five picks are yogurt, granola bars, fresh fruit, baked chips, and smoothies.
